About This Project

Florissant Empathy Map began as an experiment in making perspective-taking more accessible. The name comes from the Florissant Formation - ancient lakebeds that preserve countless traces of past life, much like empathy preserves traces of different viewpoints.

This tool exists to help people see the full picture when discussions become polarized. By mapping what different stakeholders see, hear, think, and feel, we can find common ground and communicate more effectively.

Why This Exists

Modern discussions often become echo chambers. People talk past each other because they don't understand what others see, hear, or worry about. This empathy map makes those invisible perspectives visible.

Students and educators use it in classrooms to practice perspective-taking. Community groups use it to prepare for difficult conversations. Families use it to navigate disagreements about local issues.

How It Works

The map follows a simple structure:

Start with the examples, then customize for your own issue and group.

Using With Groups

For best results with multiple people:

  1. Project the map on a screen
  2. Have each person fill in one role
  3. Discuss patterns that emerge
  4. Use the insight prompts to go deeper

Or have everyone contribute digitally using a shared link.
